How Often To Clean Manual Coffee Grinder

[Question] How often should you clean a manual burr grinder?

After every use? Every week? If you don't clean it every use won't the oils and stale left over grinds carry over to your next grind?

I think the amount of oils and stale grinds that carry over between grinds is negligible from one use to the next, but you're right that they do build up over time. One of the times cleaning is absolutely necessary is when you are switching blends/roasts, but if you are churning through a lot of the same roast for a long time I would recommend cleaning once a week to two weeks at most to keep the grinder in good working order and to get those stale grounds and oils out.

How do you clean to get rid of oils? I usually just brush away residue coffee and pretend the oils don't exist.

Most hand grinders retain very little stale grounds in them. If you are noticing oils build up you can run some Grindz tablets through once a month or so. If your grinder allows for disassembly I would do that maybe every 6 months just to get a good sweep inside. Most manufacturers do not recommend using soap or moisture to clean the burrs, except maybe a dampened towel.

I have a Hario hand grinder? I feel like it should probably be cleaned but I thought I wasn't meant to?

Since I use Lido. My answer is never (it's a pain in the ass).
